Figure 9-15: User Settings: Change User Account Type

An account type can be Administrator, Desktop User, or Custom. When you click the Change link for the Account type, the "Change User Account Type" dialog opens with options for each (see Figure 9-15).

For more detailed configuration, you click the Advanced Settings button to open the "Change Advanced User Settings" dialog, which has tabs for Contact Information, User Privileges, and Advanced (see Figure 9-16. On the Contact tab, you can add basic contact information if you wish, for an office address, as well as work and home phones.

On the User Privileges tab, you can control device access and administrative access (see Figure 9-13). You can restrict or allow access to CD-ROMs, scanners, and external storage like USB drives. You can also determine whether the user can perform administrative tasks.

The Advanced tab lets you select a home directory, the shell to use, a main group, and a user ID. Defaults are already chosen for you. A home directory in the name of the new user is specified and the shell used is the BASH shell. Normally you would not want to change these settings, though you might prefer to use a different shell, like the C-Shell. For the group, the user has a group with its own username (same as the short name).
